THE POSITION
Are you looking for an exciting career? Consider being a City of Saginaw Firefighter. Duties include fighting
fires, responding to hazardous material incidents, administering first aid, answering rescue calls, inspecting
buildings for fire hazards, and maintaining equipment and fire stations. Tours of duty are 24 hours each;
average number of tours is 2.25 weekly with 54 hours of duty a week. No two workdays are ever the same!

REQUIREMENTS
• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must be a citizen of the United States.
• No felony convictions.
• Prior fire training or experience is not required; however, you must successfully become Firefighter I and
Firefighter II certified after appointment to the position. If hired, the City would sponsor you through a Fire
Academy to obtain these certifications.
• Height must be in proportion to weight.
• Vision not less than 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye, correctable to 20/20 in one eye and
20/40 in the other eye. Must not have color vision defect.
• Must be in good physical health, free from any impediment of the senses and in possession of
extremities.
• Must possess normal hearing.
• Must possess a valid State of Michigan Driver's license and maintain one throughout employment.
• Must successfully complete a 12-month probationary period.

EXAMINATION
Applicants must successfully pass a written test and an oral interview. Applicants will be given a Study Guide
to prepare for the test. You must achieve a written test score of 70% or better to participate in the interview
process. Final candidates must successfully pass a physical agility test and all phases of the city’s pre-
employment process to include drug testing, psychological exam and a thorough background investigation.
