SUMMARY OF POSITION: Performs a variety of duties in response to medical and psychiatric emergencies, and
involved in the control and extinguishment of fires; protection of life and property; maintenance of Fire Department
buildings, quarters, equipment and related work as required. Medical supervision is received from the Medical Director or
his/her designee while administrative supervision and firefighting supervision is provided by the Fire Chief – Manchester
Fire Rescue EMS Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a standard high school or technical school or an equivalent as certified
by the State Board of Education. Candidates must possess some mechanical aptitude and have the ability to work with
mechanicalrelated tools or other mechanical equipment. Experience in firefighting, fire prevention and Emergency
Medical Technician work or an Associate's degree in Fire Science is desirable. APPLICANTS MUST BE LICENSED AS A
PARAMEDIC by the Office of Emergency Medical Services in Connecticut or be eligible to transfer an outofstate
Paramedic certification to Connecticut or be eligible for Connecticut Paramedic Licensure prior to appointment to the
position. APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF PARAMEDIC LICENSE AND CPAT* CERTIFICATION (IF
AVAILABLE) ALONG WITH APPLICATION FORM. CANDIDATES MUST POSSESS VALID CPAT BY TIME OF
APPOINTMENT.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: A minimum of not less than 20/40 uncorrected vision in one eye and 20/100 in the other
eye, with correction not less than 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other eye is required. Hearing level must meet
guidelines as established by the NFPA standard dated 1992. A rigid physical examination conducted by the Town's
physician will also be required. The physical examination will include a screening for use of illegal drugs or controlled
substances.

*Candidates are required to pass a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) conducted by the Connecticut Fire Academy.
